More Family fun in Southern Missouri: Alley Spring in Shannon Co.

My mother-in-law has been wanting to take our family to see Alley Spring for years. Given that we drive about 12 hours one way to visit – I’m typically apprehensive to load back up into the car for any amount of time exceeding one hour while we’re there. Since Alley Spring is only about six miles west of Eminence, our trip within a trip was the perfect time to hop over to see the spring.

As soon as we walked up, I knew exactly why my MIL had been so excited for us to go. The photos cannot even begin to do it justice. The colors are beyond what you would expect in real life. The greenery is thick and the blue spring water seems to glow as it bubbles. (Perhaps it does really glow a little though, since the spring is so cold and the air so hot and humid.) It certainly adds an element of etherealness. And then that incredible antique red mill barn. It’s like walking into a painting.

The mill was established in 1884 and is part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways which is a federal park. There is a ranger posted there and he can distribute Jr Ranger badges and handbooks. Definitely don’t skip that part! It was my kiddos favorite!

People are able to tour the inside of the mill building and see historical accounts. Due to COVID-19, there were parts of it blocked off and procedures slightly changed – but it didn’t bother me much since I could have stood outside and just stared for hours.

Even the kiddos loved taking in the beauty of Alley Spring.

There are walking trails that go around the backside of the spring and all around the area. We all enjoyed the light hike (despite the heat) and being able to see the spring from different angles. The kids used their Jr Ranger activity books and served as our tour guides as we made our way around the path.

If you happen to be in South East Missouri, you would be remiss to not make a stop at Alley Spring. I have heard that they host fall festivals and historical festivals on the park grounds. I don’t know about you but that absolutely sounds like a worthwhile destination and family activity. Now my new goal is to see it in all its glory in more seasons, particularly with fall colors.
